If you add this information to the fact that you're using the on-board sound, I'd say that you have a problem somewhere within the OS with the driver, and that would be a Microsoft issue. I've had Windows 8 appear to do something very similar (not on any machine of mine, because I couldn't see any point in using it when W7 works much better) on a machine at work, and we've just put it down to 'one of those things', because it happens completely randomly.

 

If you want a fix for this, then I'd suggest using an external USB sound device with a proper ASIO driver. This bypasses most of the Windows OS, and you simply don't get this sort of glitching problem with them. And also you get way better sound quality out of dedicated hardware than you ever will with the on-board sound chip. There's no point in looking for an ASIO driver for the on-board device - Realtek simply don't produce one. It's been like this for ever, and I don't think it's going to change.
