I was a dubbing mixer in a previous life and I found the most important thing when mixing is to set your monitoring levels right. If you listen to quietly you will find that you overmod and hit the output limiter too hard, if you listen too loudly you will undermod. Everybody has their own preferred listening levels, once you have found it, the recording levels almost look after themselves. Mark the volume control on your amplifier so that you can easily find 'your' level. You will find that you might need to increase the level slightly as your ears get tired but try to remember to reset it after a break or in the morning.
